Thanksgiving

turkey

Here is a picture of Tommy the Turkey. He is the kind of bird we're all going to be eating over Thanksgiving...

Seriously tho... Over thanksgiving why not play the following game with a friend or family member:

List things you're thankful for. One of you start off, "I am thankful for..." and the other continues "I am thankful for..." Keep going until one of you can out-thank the other. Although this is cheesy it has an incredible way of making you feel pretty happy about everything the Lord has done for you!

Have a great Holiday and come back with plenty of photos and stories for the website.

Happy Halloween!

Reflecting on this ghoulish holiday, I started thinking about all of the horror movies that have been hitting the theaters lately.

30+Days+of+Night+poster
Horror movies are not my thing. I don't do well with blood or gore or scary beasts. Even the commercials for these movies scare the daylights out of me.

In particular, there's a scene in the commercial for 30 Days of Night which really frightens me -- chills me right down to the bone. In the scene, a vampire/monster is descending upon one of the heroines (I assume). And she whispers in a quivering voice, "Oh God..." To which, the vampire replies with a soft hiss, "No God."

That gives me the shivers just thinking about it now. I haven't seen the movie, so I'm assuming there are scarier, gorier parts to it than this one scene I'm referring to. But to me, the thought of a world without God is absolutely terrifying.

There would be no justice, no rationale for evil (or good, for that matter), no truth. Or, to put it in "Christina" terms: what's the point?

Deep down, I think we all want a reason to live, ultimate meaning, the knowledge that wrongs will be righted. Look at history's greatest (and most popular) pieces of literature and film -- these are the themes that resonate.

Without God, we might be able to make the world a better place, but it will never be the place it was meant to be -- where justice is served, and order and peace reign.

I know I just pierced the tip of the iceberg with this post. So feel free to discuss in the comments.

Pasta Party

PA220077 PA220078 PA220088

On monday evening a few of us got together for a Pasta party. It was a relaxed a fun evening. Meat sauce, macaroni, spaghetti... and 'dancing with the stars'. Not my choice of fine entertainment but I managed to sit in a place where I couldn't see the TV!

This Is Why We Love You So Much, George

From the latest edition of The Real Food Digest, from his movie review of Across the Universe:

"Some may feel it is a little over the top. It is, so what."

Weekend Fun Up Ahead!

Has anyone else seen this SNL skit? It's absolutely hilarious!

Lots of fun activities going on this weekend, peeps. Hiking at Mianus River Gorge Trail on Saturday afternoon (talk to Brie). Music via the Edgar Harding Trio at DragonFly in Stamford on Saturday night (talk to Edgar). Operation Christmas Child at the Woman's Club of Greenwich on Sunday afternoon (talk to Brie again).

If anyone wants to totally geek out tomorrow, Andy and I are going to a game night in Norwalk. It's a group of young people eating pizza and playing board games. It'll be my first time, but Andy goes all the time, and says it's really fun.

What are your plans for the weekend?

Friday Night Fun

Instead of Buffalo Wild Wings as had been the original plan on Friday night, we ended up at Chavin across the street, a great little Peruvian restaurant. The wings place was overrun by Yankees-Indians revelers, so we decided to high tail it to a quieter locale.

George joined us a little later at dinner, bearing a report on the big baseball game. One of the players had lost it due to a swarm of bugs, he said.

"Good one, George! And did a plague of locusts follow afterwards?"

Turns out, George wasn't kidding. So we were wrong this time. But cry wolf enough times, and we stop believing you!!

We spent a large part of the rest of the evening talking about moldy food, and which molds are okay to eat, and what sorts of moldy foods we've encountered in our fridges.

How did we even get on the topic? Who knows. But we did figure out that if you have to eat mold, it should be the blue variety and not the white. White mold can KILL you. But really, we decided, you shouldn't eat mold no matter what. It just ain't worth it.

Here we are (above) after a hearty meal. The food was fantastic. I loved mine -- steak, two fried eggs, fried plaintains, rice and fries. Sounds healthy, right? It wasn't, but I would still come back in a heartbeat.

Andy and I didn't end up going to see Across the Universe with everyone, so someone else will have to fill you in!

On an unrelated note, who wants to go see Elizabeth: The Golden Age with me??

There's a Reason We Call It Real Food

Mark did a very, very foolish thing. He gave me access to post on this blog!!

So for my first post, I thought I'd put up the recipe to Husband's Delight. As some of you know, I made this meal for RF a month back. Thankfully, God was with us that day and no one got diarrhea.

Anyway, I've gotten some requests for the recipe, so I thought I'd post it here. It's taken from my Amish Country Cookbook (yes, I grew up near the Amish, stop laughing). Let me tell ya though - I made this for my now-husband, Andy, on our second date, so I guess it worked! Below is a picture of us in Montreal in May.

HUSBAND'S DELIGHT

1 lb. hamburger
2 cans tomato or pizza sauce
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp garlic salt
1 T sugar
1 T worcestershire sauce
1 tsp ground black pepper
8 oz sour cream
4 oz cream cheese (room temperature)
1 onion, finely chopped
8 oz noodles (I prefer spaghetti)

Cook onion. Add hamburger meat and brown. Drain juices.

To this, add in the tomato sauce, salt, garlic salt, sugar, worcestershire sauce and ground black pepper. Simmer for 15 minutes on low heat.

In a separate bowl, blend sour cream and cream cheese.

Cook noodles according to package instructions, and drain.

Mix noodles with meat mixture. Place a layer of this mixture in a casserole dish. Top with a layer of cream cheese mixture. Repeat process.

Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Bon appetit!!
